IN SUPPORT OF THE AMANDA J. CUNNINGHAM LEADERSHIP CENTER | | |
About the Inspiration The Giving Gavel exists in large part due to the support and encouragement provided by Ohio University alumna Leona Hughes ’30, a longtime University benefactor and member of The Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees.
At the beginning of the University’s Bicentennial Campaign, Mrs. Hughes insisted that students play a prominent role in the fundraising effort and that they be challenged to develop a commitment to supporting their alma mater while students, rather than waiting until they achieved alumni status. She noted that students were the next generation of leaders and that the University needed to support their development both as citizens and as philanthropists.
When presented with the idea of providing wooden gavels to students as tokens of recognition, Mrs. Hughes coined the phrase “Giving Gavel.” In August, 2004, Mrs. Hughes was awarded her own “Giving Gavel” in recognition of her commitment to the students of Ohio University.
