On May 7th and 8th, 2010 the Ohio University Office for Diversity, Access and Equity hosted its first conference called Building Community Through Diversity Initiatives. This undergraduate research conference was supported by an 1804 grant and brought together a community of students from all Ohio University campuses to present their work on diversity, multiculturalism, intersectionality, and identity in a professional setting. The 2011 research symposium will be hosted at Ohio University Lancaster campus.
The objective of this conference is to cultivate a community of students who are interested in diversity and identity issues, facilitate cross-campus interactions and learning, and provide unique opportunities for undergraduate learning and research. Most importantly, it will provide an opportunity for students from the regional campuses and Athens campus to interact with like-minded peers in a welcoming, intellectual, and social context. The world continues to grow increasingly diverse and many people do not understand what diversity is or how to deal with it in their lives. This conference is an opportunity for students to share their approaches to understanding issues related to diversity, intersectionality, multiculturalism, and identity. It is our hope that this will make university constituents more aware of and inclusive regarding diversity issues. We look forward to seeing Ohio University and regional campus faculty, staff, and students participating and attending future conferences to discuss and learn about the value of a diverse environment.
