Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among adolescents and the 2nd among college students.
According to the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), approximately 1,100 college students complete suicide every year. This translates into an average of 3 college students complete suicide each day.
National surveys of college students report 8-10% suicidal ideation rate each year.
About 10% of college students on any given campus think about killing themselves every year. At Ohio University, if there are 22,000 students, about 2,200 contemplate suicide each year.
Those students who are most in need are largely unknown to campus mental health service providers. In fact, less than 20% of students who die by suicide in the U.S. are identified as past or current clients of college/university counseling centers (National Survey of College Counseling Center Directors, AUCCCD, 2002-2004).
