Vision, Goals & Objectives

Vision Statement

The Ohio University Mental Health Peer Advocates aims to transform the campus culture surrounding mental health issues by taking a proactive stance towards decreasing stigma surrounding psychological concerns. Nominated by their peers as individuals who are sensitive to others psychological concerns, peer-advocates hope to create a safe environment to discuss mental health issues, how they affect students, and the resources that students can access.

Program Goals
    •    Increase awareness of student voice regarding mental health issues within the organizations that serve students on campus—primarily within CPS and the Division of Student Affairs
    •    Increase awareness of student concerns regarding mental heath care within the University
    •    Increase students’ awareness of mental illness
    •    Increase students’ understanding of barriers to counseling
    •    Increase students’ knowledge of the campus resources available to students experiencing psychological distress
    •    Increase students likelihood to seek support for psychological concerns

Learning Objectives
As a Mental Health Peer Advocate students will:
a.     Develop an understanding of the resources available to students on campus and off-campus
b.     Develop an understanding of the types of psychological concerns commonly experienced by college students
c.     Develop a sensitivity to the experience of psychological distress
d.     Cultivate a spirit of advocacy among their peers and community
e.     Communicate empathy to their peers regarding the experience of psychological illness (i.e., promoting the message that students who suffer from psychological concerns are not alone, and that support is available)
f.      Develop effective listening skills
g.     Develop and facilitate peer-based educational programming
