1. DESCRIPTION

The BASICS Program (Brief Alcohol and Other Drugs Screening and Intervention for College Students) provides direct counseling services to OU students, the majority of whom are referred by the Office of Judiciaries following an incident involving substance use and a violation of university policy. The BASICS program utilizes motivational interviewing and the stage of change theoretical model to promote harm reduction in a two-session, individualized, one-on-one intervention. BASICS Counselors and Supervisors meet as a team, in a cooperative and competency-building atmosphere, for purposes of training and program administration.

2. DEADLINES

Applications are currently being accepted for Spring Quarter interviews. Please submit as soon as possible, and before April 15th.

3. PRACTICUM / INTERNSHIP / FIELD PLACEMENT

The positions are 20 hours a week. The experience can function as a field placement for Social Work graduate students, or as a practicum and internship for Counselor Education students (see below).

Psychology graduate students may be most interested in BASICS for purposes of clinical training in substance abuse and financial aid.

Special considerations apply for each department. Please contact Jason Weber at 740-593-1616 to discuss how the BASICS program works as a practicum, internship, or field placement in your degree program.

4. BENEFITS TO GRADUATE ASSISTANTS

The benefits listed below are subject to compliance with the policies of your home department and/or professional licensure board.

A. Financial Aid / Compensation

BASICS Counselors may receive monetary compensation as Graduate Assistants from Counseling & Psychological Services, commensurate with the Graduate Assistant pay structure of their department. Tuition waivers, if applicable, are provided through the home department.

B. Education / Training / Certification / Professionalism

BASICS Counselors receive ongoing training and clinical supervision in the effective use of motivational interviewing in conducting a brief, two-session intervention with substance using, abusing, and dependent college students. BASICS Counselors may become qualified to apply for chemical dependency counselor certification in the state of Ohio. Additional experiences in professionalism and program administration are a valuable aspect of working as part of a team in Ohio University’s busy and productive university counseling center.
Clinical Training
The BASICS Program is an empirically-validated protocol. BASICS Counselors gain familiarity and training in the following:
    1.    Conducting brief interventions using Motivational Interviewing.
    2.    Identifying and differentiating substance use, abuse and dependence.
    3.    Applying appropriate risk reduction strategies.
    4.    Assessing stage of change to deliver a personalized intervention.
    5.    Integrating educational interventions into the counseling process.
    6.    Working productively with mandated and, at times, resistant  clients.
    7.    Integrating assessment instruments (e.g., Beck Depression Inventory II, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Socrates 8A and 8D, Brief Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire) into client-centered feedback.
Administrative Experience
The BASICS Program Graduate Assistants have been instrumental to the formation and fine-tuning of this intervention, taking initiative to create, coordinate and maintain the day-to-day operations. In addition to clinical responsibilities, BASICS Counselors are asked to share administrative responsibilities that contribute to their professional development.
BASICS Counselors:
    1.    Participate in weekly staff meetings to address programmatic issues.
    2.    Organize and secure client files, including electronic information.
    3.    Monitor all aspects of their work to ensure compliance with HIPAA and other legal statutes.
    4.    Contribute to the development, revision and implementation of Policies and Procedures.
    5.    Consult with outside professionals/agencies.
    6.    Participate in the identification of their training needs.

C. Practicum / Internship

Depending on your department and program, applicants may be eligible to simultaneously fulfill their practicum and/or internship requirements at Counseling & Psychological Services.

Graduate students in Counselor Education, for example, are able to utilize the first quarter of their BASICS Graduate Assistant experience as a 20 hour/week practicum (with 4-6 additional training hours, spent preparing for internship), and two subsequent quarters as a 30 hour/week internship in which 20 hours of BASICS participation are combined with an additional 10 hours of clinical work, training, and supervision with Counseling & Psychological Services. This marks an excellent opportunity for Counselor Education grads who intend to pursue LPC licensure with a focus on clinical practice. Expect exposure to a wide range of client concerns, with plenty of challenge and plenty of supervisory support.

Graduate students in Social Work are able to utilize their 20 hour/week experience as a field placement for three consecutive quarters. Note that Social Work policies do not allow the field placement to be a paid position.

Note: it is not required that an applicant’s BASICS experience function as a practicum or internship. Qualified individuals seeking valuable clinical experiences and financial compensation are encouraged to apply.

5. ELIGIBILITY
