The Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay
(COTIM) and Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana(UKSW) are now jointly planning a nine-week intensive program in advanced Indonesian, to
be held June 15 – August 15, 2010, the thirty third
such program in a continuous line of successful summer advanced language
programs; hosted by several institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia. Funding
for this program is contingent in large part upon receipt of funds from
the United States Department of Education under the Fulbright-Hays group
study abroad programs.
This program is designed to include three basic components: intensive language
study in small groups five days a week for nine weeks, a one-week period
for field work on individual research topics, and immersion in Indonesian
culture through interaction with Indonesian students and residence in an
Indonesian home.
-
The Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay
(COTIM), includes those universities in the United States which
provide regular instruction in Indonesian: Arizona State University, Cornell
University, University of Colorado at Boulder, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, University of
British Columbia, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Los
Angeles, University of Hawai'i, University of Michigan, University of Washington,
University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Yale University.

The host institution, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW) is located
in in Salatiga. Salatiga is a city in Central Java, Indonesia, located between the cities of Semarang, Surakarta and Jogjakarta. It sits at the foot of Mount Merbabu (3,142 m) and Mount Telomoyo, and has a relatively cool climate due to its elevated position (600 metres). The highest temperature is in October (31.8ºC = 89.24ºF) and the lowest is in July (23.9ºC = 75.02ºF). This nice weather makes Salatiga the best place to study. In addition to its climate, the city also offers a magnificent view of Mt. Merbabu and during clear sky days, we may be lucky to view the tip of Mt. Merapi’s peak. Located about 47 km south of Semarang and about 100 km north of Yogyakarta, Salatiga offers its residents the privilege of living in a small town and the accessibility to what big cities have to offer. In addition to all the conveniences, the city, being located in Central Java, is close enough to cultural centers such as Borobudur temple in Magelang, and old palaces and batik making in Jogjakarta and Solo. For those who like the nature, climbing Merbabu Mountain has always become the favorite weekend activity for many our domestic and international students. Today, Salatiga is one of 35 provincial districts/cities in Central Java with population of more or less 150,000. At least 90% of its population is Javanese with a small minority of Chinese and a sprinkling of people from other ethnic groups particularly students from all over Indonesia who are studying at the university. More than 70% of the population is Moslem, but with Satya Wacana Christian University that invites many Christian students from all over the country, the city is then rich in the spirit of pluralism. UKSW has long hosted Indonesian language program called PIBBI (Program Intensive Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia). Since 1973, there are more than 3,000 foreigners graduated from PIBBI.
