University seeks applications for new presidential graduate student medal awards

Beginning Jan. 20, 2019, applications will be accepted for two new presidential graduate student medal awards, one for a master’s student and one for a doctoral student at Ohio University.

“Acknowledging graduate students for their accomplishments is an important part of being a national research university and insuring a rewarding, quality academic experience,” said Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis. “We commend all graduate students who strive for excellence academically and professionally.”

The first is the Presidential Medal for Outstanding Research or Creative Excellence Demonstrated by a Doctoral Student, which was created to recognize a doctoral student who have demonstrated academic excellence in research or creative activitiy, as it relates to his or her field of study. This may include, but is not limited to, a project, publication, or body of work.

To be considered for the one-time, $1,000 doctoral student award, each applicant must:

  • Be a currently enrolled doctoral student at Ohio University at time of application.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Have shown strong potential to conduct high-level, original work and make contributions to the scholarly literature in their field.
  • Provide a statement highlighting his or her accomplishments and activities as related to the award’s purpose in less than 1,000 words.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation where the reference addresses the quality of the student’s work. One must come from a current OHIO faculty member (limit to two pages per reference).
     

The second award is the Presidential Medal for Scholarly or Creative Excellence Demonstrated by a Master’s Student, created to recognize a master’s student whose research or creative activity directly contributes to the educational, economic, physical, social or cultural well-being of a given community, locally or around the globe. Special consideration will be given to those with research focused in Appalachia.

To be considered for the one-time $1,000 graduate student award, each applicant must:

  • Be a currently enrolled master’s student at Ohio University at the time of application.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Provide a statement highlighting his or her accomplishments and activities as related to the award’s purpose in less than 750 words.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation where the reference addresses the quality of the student’s work. One must come from a current OHIO faculty member (limit to two pages per reference).

 

Applications open on Jan. 20, 2019, and the deadline to apply is Feb. 20, 2019.
