The Environmental Studies Sustainability Film Series continues this spring with the free showing of “Saving Sea Turtles: Preventing Extinction,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Athena Cinema in uptown Athens. 

The film will be screened in collaboration with the OHIO Office of Sustainability, Green Energy Ohio and the Athena Cinema.

Narrated by renowned scientist Dr. Sylvia Earle, this 2017 feature-length independent documentary tells the larger natural history story of the world’s rarest sea turtle, the Kemp’s Ridley, and how humans pushed a healthy population of them to the precipice of extinction and are now slowly helping the species recover.

From the beaches of Massachusetts to Mexico, Texas and Georgia, this film highlights the collaborative work that is being done to save the turtles from extinction.

All Environmental Studies sustainability films are shown on Wednesdays at the Athena Cinema with free admission. Following each showing, there is a panel discussion featuring OHIO faculty and students and community members.

The goal of the Office of Sustainability staff is to create an engaging and educational experience for students and community members. According to website, they “envision students and graduates as leaders in sustainability challenges and solutions, taking their concerns and ideas on climate change, energy solutions and biodiversity challenges to classrooms, board rooms and places of policy making, to act as stewards and leaders in their work and communities.”
