Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis shared the following message with students, faculty and staff welcoming them back for Spring Semester 2019.
Happy first day of classes, Bobcats!
As we prepare for another semester, I wish to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to Ohio University.
The start of a new semester is always an important time as students learn new schedules and are faced with different challenges and opportunities. Long-lasting relationships will be formed, and I look forward to meeting with many of you throughout the semester.
January 18 at 1 p.m., Ellis Hall – The College of Arts & Sciences will be holding a ribbon-cutting for the newly-renovated, state-of-the-art Ellis Hall. The updated facility will feature seminar rooms, a grand entry hall, student and faculty collaboration spaces and a student publishing space. It will house three departments, English, Philosophy and Classics and World Religions.
January 21 at 10:30 a.m., Galbreath Chapel – Silent March in Remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Silent March will begin in front of Galbreath Chapel and end at the fourth-floor entrance of Baker University Center. Marchers are encouraged to bring a civil-rights themed sign. This event is open to the public. The event is sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. A celebratory brunch will follow.
January 24 at 7 p.m., Baker University Center Ballroom A – The inaugural Challenging Dialogues lecture series with Dr. Carolyn Lukensmeyer, Executive Director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse. The interactive presentation, titled “The Power of In/Civility: Engaging in Challenging Conversations Across the University, Community, Nation,” will be the first in the lecture series and is intended to kick-off this new initiative, including the audience in a thought-provoking dialogue. The event will be free and open to the public.
January 20 – February 20: Application period for two presidential graduate student medal awards, one for a master’s student and one for a doctoral student at Ohio University
A new semester is an exciting time for students, faculty and staff. We welcome you back home with open arms and look forward to finishing the 2018-2019 Academic Year strong. 2019 Spring Commencement is 109 days away for graduate students and 110 days away for our undergraduates! It will go fast, so let’s make the most of each of our days together.
