Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus.
How surprised were you to win the Classified Employee of the Month award?
I was very surprised. As a matter of fact, when the members of Classified Senate came into the room to present someone with the award, I was looking around trying to figure out who it was.
What is your job title and how long have you been at Ohio University?
I’m an administrative associate in the Dean’s Office (for Associate Dean Brenda Phillips) and have been with Ohio University for 5 1/2 years. I began in January 2009 on a temporary assignment and was made a full-time employee in January 2011.
What are the most enjoyable things about your job?
I thoroughly enjoy the people I work with, including the faculty. We are able to laugh, have a good time and still make sure the office functions efficiently. It’s nice having a dean and associate dean that actually treat you like a friend and not just a coworker. You definitely feel valued and appreciated.
What is your hometown?
I was born and raised in Chillicothe, Ohio, and still reside here.
What are your long-term goals?
My long-term goals are to get my bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in African American Studies and a master’s degree in public administration. I would eventually like to work in administration in a historically black college or university, preferably down south.
What was the last good book you read?
It was "When Girlfriends Step Up." It’s part of a series and has no educational value, LOL! It was free on Amazon and I love free things.
If you weren’t in your present job, you would be working as a ______.
Cruise line director. I love to travel and I think I would have been good at it.
What things in life are most important to you?
My faith and my family. I hold both near and dear to my heart and feel that I would be nothing without them.
Where is your favorite vacation destination and why?
I love to cruise. Our family goes on cruises every other year and as long as it takes me to a beach, I’m not too picky.
What are your hobbies?
I love to read. It’s my decompression time and their lives are normally more exciting than mine. I’m also a Netflix-a-holic.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I have a twin sister and I’m four minutes older. Yes, it counts.
What are your favorite TV shows?
My favorite shows are The Office, Frasier, Golden Girls and Psych.
Who are your favorite musicians?
I absolutely love Bruno Mars, Charlie Wilson, Fantasia and Melanie Fiona.
What is the next big event you can't wait for?
My husband and I are going to Mexico in September for our 10-year anniversary. I’m excited because we’re not taking our kids!
Who is your favorite celebrity?
I love Tyler Perry because he started with nothing (homeless and living in his car) and worked hard to become the man he is now. He is also very giving and doesn’t forget where he came from.
Who is the most annoying celebrity?
Justin Bieber. He seems like an arrogant, spoiled brat.
What is your dream car/truck/SUV?
I want a black 2015 GMC Yukon Denali.
What is your favorite saying or quote?
I have so many but one that stands out to me is, “Nearly all men can stand adversity; but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” Abraham Lincoln
