Unscheduled outage closes several Athens Campus buildings

UPDATE 9:35 A.M.

As of 8:30 a.m. July 18, the unscheduled outage of the Athens campus West Green Chilled Water Plant continues. Repairs are ongoing, however mechanical issues with aging equipment and extremely high outside temperatures are impacting progress. Currently closed West Green buildings remain closed.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has again issued a heat advisory for Athens County from noon to 7 p.m. Due to these increased temperatures, buildings across campus will experience warmer than normal temperatures.

Additionally, AEP's power grid is again being stressed by high temperatures. There is again a high probability that Energy Direct may call for a power demand reduction. All faculty staff and students on the Athens campus are urged to conserve power throughout the day—turn off lights; turn off air conditioners; unplug unneeded devices such as coffee makers, printers, copiers; and so on

The current status of impacted West Green buildings is below:

On Line

These buildings will experience warmer than normal temperatures:

ARC
Life Sciences

Off Line

These buildings are closed. Due to health and safety reasons, no activities are to be conducted in these buildings and no classes or functions will be held in these buildings.
