ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio ¬ In an effort to bring together talents of students with professional opportunities, Ohio University Eastern has instituted an office aimed specifically at cultivating internships for interested students.
“Fulfilling an internship can help a student’s resume stand out. It allows them to ‘test drive’ careers and bring their education outside the walls of the classroom,” explained OUE Internship and Career Services specialist Lisa Jeffries.
A recent successful student internship involved Derek Deal of Barnesville, Ohio. Deal, a bachelor of science in applied management major, secured an internship with Barnesville Hospital and assisted in organizing the Employee Capital Campaign.
“I fully believe that this internship gave me a chance to grow my skills as well as discover my strengths, weaknesses and interests,” said Deal. “Additionally, this opportunity boosted my confidence and enabled me to gain more insight on working in a professional environment. The biggest highlight was assisting in the Employee Capital Campaign as I played a contributing role in it from start to finish.”
This internship experience for Deal developed into an opportunity for Barnesville Hospital as well. He took his classroom knowledge of research, editing and computer programing to the hospital which offered a direct benefit to the department.
“Derek’s internship coincided perfectly with our Employee Campaign for Barnesville Hospital’s Emergency Department renovation and expansion project,” explained Jan Chambers, director of development for Barnesville Hospital Foundation. “It was wonderful to have Derek actively involved in the early planning stages of the campaign and then his last day of the internship was the Celebration for the Employee Campaign, which exceeded its goal. Derek contributed to the success of this project. He was enthusiastic, had a good work ethic and was willing to tackle any task. It was our pleasure to have Derek as a student intern,” Chambers added.
Internships provide real-world experience to enhance resumes as new graduates search for employment. Finding the right fit for students and employers requires research, interviewing and networking. Ohio University Eastern has a mission to bring these opportunities together in the Student Services Office.
