Community open forums to discuss education in Appalachia

Forums sponsored by the Southeast Ohio Teacher Development Collaborative and Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools

Elementary schools, high schools, and colleges are joining forces to benefit southeast Ohio's children.

The Southeast Ohio Teacher Development Collaborative (SEO-TDC) will be collaborating with the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS) in sponsoring three regional community forums.

The first open forum will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Athens Community Center, Meeting Room B, 701 E. State St., Athens, Ohio.

Parents, teachers, and concerned community members are invited to join panel members including the Dean of The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education at Ohio University, Dr. Renée A. Middleton, and representatives from other institutions of higher education to speak up for Appalachia's children and their teachers.

Topics to be discussed will include the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), Ohio's New Learning Standards, and District Building Report Cards.

"This is about more than getting people together to talk about an important issue. Data gathered from this forum will be used to identify regional needs," said Dean Middleton. "It won't remain in discussion; it will get results. The data will be shared with the Ohio Board of Regents and the Ohio Department of Education."

Two additional forums will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, hosted by Marietta College and Muskingum University, McDonough Auditorium, 215 5th Street, Marietta, Ohio, and at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, hosted by Shawnee State University and University of Rio Grande, Jackson High School Room 110, 500 Vaughn St., Jackson, Ohio.

These forums are just one of many actions being undertaken by institutions of higher education in Ohio and the Southeast Ohio Teacher Development Collaborative to connect to their communities and ensure the best education for Ohio's children.
