Guest Lecturer Meredith Pizzi to conduct Entrepreneurship for Artists Feb. 27 & 28

The School of Music in collaboration with Arts for Ohio, the School of Dance, Film, and Theater, the College of Fine Arts, the American Music Therapy Association of Students and The Center for Entrepreneurship will be hosting Meredith Pizzi MT-BC at the Athens campus to speak to College of Fine Arts faculty and Ohio University students about Entrepreneurship for Artists from February 27 – 28.

Meredith Pizzi has been very successful in the business world of music therapy and currently owns and runs her own Roman Music Therapy business. She has won national awards for her development of her company, and has become the ‘go to’ person for music therapists and artists around the country who want to start or promote their own businesses. However, one of Pizzi’s passions is to promote entrepreneurship specifically for artists, how they can and should be prepared for the market of selling their craft and their skills after their studies are completed.

“Too often students begin studying arts with an infinite amount of passion for the art, dance or music itself, but with few ideas or plans about how they are actually going to make a living after earning their degree,” said Pizzi.. “Students with training in the arts have many skills that can be applied to entrepreneurial work. By applying these skills they have gained as artists, new graduates can enter the work force prepared for the job market of today, and prepared to build a successful career from their training.”

During her visit to Ohio University, her lectures will be designed to reach a wide variety of audiences in the College of Fine Arts and the University. Pizzi is a very successful businesswoman who is also a dedicated and talented artist, which allows her to share her expertise in both art and business!

In addition to the lectures, workshop and Q&A sessions, Pizzi will also be hosting a special Shark Tank experience open to all Ohio University students. ABC’s Shark Tank TV show first premiered in 2009 and shows a variety of business pitches from aspiring entrepreneurs to a panel of potential investors. Pizzi will be creating a similar environment at OU where she will provide professional feedback and advice on student proposal ideas. No funding for proposals will be provided.

“Standing in front of an audience and delivering a pitching is a unique way to gain clarity, increase your confidence and practice your ability to clearly articulate your ideas,” said Pizzi. “Whether it is pitching a new product, a particular service, or even your dream for a new position at a future employer, delivering a pitch gives students the opportunity to sit in the hot seat and lay the ground work for future success as an entrepreneur, or an employee. Students throughout the University are invited to participate by submitting a pitch proposal or by joining in the audience. There will be active learning opportunities for everyone in attendance.”

The event From Paper to Reality: Pitch Your Proposal – A Shark Tank Experience! is open to all Ohio University students. For information on Pitch Proposal requirements, please visit www.ohio.edu/finearts. All pitches are due on Tuesday, February 25 and can be emailed to Kamile Geist at geistk@ohio.edu.
