Ohio University is closed beginning at 5 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. Wednesday due to inclement weather

All campuses and centers will resume normal operations at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29

Due to reports from the National Weather Service forecasting inclement winter weather, including possibly severe wind chill factors, Ohio University leadership is closing all campuses and centers until 5 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29.

All classes and activities (including student group meetings) are canceled until 5 a.m. Wednesday. Employees are instructed to report for their regularly scheduled shifts and students are to attend regularly scheduled classes beginning Wednesday morning.

Essential personnel (such as those in Facilities and Culinary Services) should report to work as scheduled. If you are unclear as to whether you are considered essential personnel, please contact your supervisor. If you feel it is unsafe for you to travel to work or if the weather impacts your ability to work, contact your supervisor. Student employees deemed essential personnel will be contacted by their supervisors.

Forecasted temperatures are expected to be so severe that exposed skin may freeze, become frostbitten and people may become ill with hypothermia in minutes. Everyone is advised to stay indoors, limit exposure to the weather and make sure you are dressed appropriately for temperatures indoors and outdoors. Standard deicing treatments to walkways and roadways do not work as efficiently in severe temperatures and ice may be present. Building temperatures may be cooler than normal. Please report internal building temperatures below 65 degrees to the Facilities Work Center at 740-593-2911.

In the event of an emergency, contact 911 or seek treatment at a local hospital. Campus Care and Counseling and Psychological Services will not be open during this closure. The afterhours number for emergency counseling is 740-593-1616.

Residence halls, dining halls and courts will remain open during normal hours. For hours of retail operations, check www.ohio.edu/food. All campus events, including catered events, are canceled.

ONLY three other Athens Campus buildings will remain open with altered hours during this closure.

  • Ping Recreation Center will be open Monday until 10 p.m.; Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and will open at its regular time on Wednesday.
  • Baker University Center will be open Monday until 10 p.m.; Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and will open at its regular time on Wednesday.
  • Alden Library will be open Monday until 10 p.m.; Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and will open at its regular time on Wednesday.

A shuttle through Transportation and Parking Services will be running Monday and Tuesday evening through 10:30 p.m. Campus Area Transit System routes can be found at http://www.facilities.ohiou.edu/cats/.

Employees and supervisors will receive a separate communication from payroll regarding respective University pay policy and procedures.

Be sure and share information about the University's closure with your colleagues and classmates. Updates to the University's status will be posted to ohio.edu/alert and sent via e-mail and text message. University leadership will continue to assess the weather and determine updates by tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 28) afternoon.
