United 2 Give, United 2 Help: Annual fundraising campaign kicks off Nov. 1


As the holiday season approaches, there are more and more opportunities for the OHIO community to give back to those in need. One such way is United Appeal’s "United 2 Give, United 2 Help" fundraising campaign, which runs Nov. 1 through Dec. 24.

For 57 years United Appeal has been working to serve the less fortunate in Athens County. This year, the organization is partnering with 19 local agencies as well as Athens County 2-1-1, which will all benefit from OHIO's fundraising efforts. Athens County 2-1-1 is a free, 24-hour service through United Appeal that connects area residents to more than 300 local agencies and government services.

United Appeal's 2012 campaign aims for 12 percent participation among OHIO faculty and staff, with a campus-wide fundraising goal of $50,000. Last year, OHIO fell 1 percent shy of its 10 percent participation goal, with about $45,000 raised.

"We came so close to reaching our goal last year, and we felt it would be beneficial to increase the goal this year to provide an additional push for faculty and staff to participate," said United Appeal Co-Chair Jessica Wingett, manager of the Office of Research and Grants with Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

On Thursday, OHIO faculty and staff will receive a letter from United Appeal, which will include campaign information as well as the 2012 Pledge Form. Faculty and staff wishing to donate via payroll deduction may indicate this on the form.

But according to Wingett, all forms of giving and all amounts of giving do make a difference.
 
"In terms of value, I believe we are very, very fortunate to be part of the University community as well as the Athens community, and it's our responsibility to give back where we can," Wingett said. "This is a perfect opportunity to do that."
