Parking changes to take effect July 1


The Transportation and Parking Committee, comprised of Ohio University faculty, staff and students, is announcing several parking changes on the Athens campus, effective July 1, 2013. The changes, which include rate increases for campus meters and the Baker University Center garage as well as new rules regarding motorcycle parking and parking in commuter lots, were approved after the committee sought input from the University’s senate bodies as well as the entire OHIO community.

The Transportation and Parking Committee reviews and makes recommendations on all aspects of transportation and parking on campus. The committee reviewed several options for the 2013 fiscal year in regards to Transportation and Parking Service’s budgetary needs and forwarded several recommendations to the vice president of finance and administration. Those recommendations, which included these rate increases and changes to motorcycle parking, were then vetted by the University’s representative bodies. In addition, this past spring the committee asked the OHIO community to comment on its recommendations via a special website that included automated email links for feedback. 


Rate changes

Rates for the parking meters on campus will be 75 cents per hour. Transportation and Parking Services staff is asking those who use these meters to be mindful of these changes to ensure they are depositing the correct amount of money to cover the appropriate amount of time.

At the Baker University Center Garage, parking rates will increase from 75 cents per hour to $1 per hour.


Commuter (Purple) Lot changes

Effective July 1, 2013, all commuter (purple) lots on campus will require a permit from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Previously, permits were required in these lots from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This change will make all lots on the Athens campus – with the exception of priority lots – require a permit from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Priority lots require permits at all times.


Motorcycle parking changes

Beginning July 1, 2013, all motorcycles on campus must display a valid Ohio University Motorcycle Decal or permit when parked within the designated motorcycle parking lots on campus. A locking device is available for those who do not want to place a decal on their motorcycle or who already have a valid permit to use on their bike. The cost of this locking device, which is designed to prevent theft, is $25. Locking devices that are misplaced or broken will need to be replaced at the owner’s expense. All decals will be valid Aug. 1, 2013, through July 31, 2014.

Faculty/staff and commuters who already have a current permit for their motorcycle must purchase a locking device and place their permit within the device. There will be no additional fees for parking for these individuals.

Faculty/staff and commuters who do not have a current permit for their motorcycle must purchase the following:

A Commuter Motorcycle Decal costs $31.25 per year. This fee will be prorated.

•A Faculty/Staff Motorcycle Decal costs $37.50 per year. This fee will be prorated.

Also beginning July 1, 2013, there will be two types of motorcycle lots on the Athens campus – those for daily motorcycle parking and those for storage motorcycle parking. 

The Daily Motorcycle Lots are available to individuals commuting to campus daily only. Use of these lots requires a valid commuter or faculty/staff decal or permit.

The Storage Motorcycle Lots are for those individuals who wish to store their motorcycle on campus, but can also be used by those with a commuter decal or permit.

Students who wish to purchase a permit for motorcycle parking and who do not have a current campus parking permit for another vehicle must purchase a decal for the Storage Motorcycle Lots. Those decals cost $200 per year, and the fee will be prorated.

Students who already have purchased a parking permit for a vehicle and who also want to obtain a decal for a motorcycle must purchase a decal for the Storage Motorcycle Lots for a fee of $50. That decal fee will be prorated.

Decals and parking permits may be purchased at Parking Services, 100 Factory St. The office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The office also posts all of its parking-related information at www.facilities.ohiou.edu/parking. This website allows you to view your parking account, pay a citation online, appeal a citation, register a vehicle, request a permit, and much more.
