Tips on handling suspicious packages or letters


Thursday's incident where an Ohio University West Union Street Office Center employee reportedly received an envelope containing a suspicious white powdery substance, serves as an opportunity to share safety precautions for handling suspicious delivered packages or envelopes.

Here are some tips from Ohio University Department Risk Management and Safety:  

•Call 911 or 740-593-1911 to reach the Ohio University Police Department. 

•Keep yourself and others away from the object. 

•Do not use cell phones or radio equipment within 100 feet of object. 

•If instructed to evacuate, move at least 300 feet away from the building. 

•Follow directions of Ohio University Police, Athens Fire, or other critical response personnel. 

•Do not reenter the building until instructed by either Ohio University Police or Athens Fire personnel.
