Board of Trustees welcomes new members

Cary Rodman Cooper and Janelle Simmons added by Gov. Kasich


Gov. John Kasich recently announced the appointment of Cary Rodman Cooper and Janelle Simmons to the Ohio University Board of Trustees.

An attorney and 1964 graduate of Ohio University, Cooper is an experienced business litigator in the Toledo area, handling business litigation. Cooper also has extensive appellate experience in state and federal courts and served two years as a public defender representing indigent criminal defendants in trials and appeals, including seven murder trials.

Cooper regularly serves as an arbitrator in business and healthcare disputes and is an active member of the American Arbitration Association's Commercial Panel of Arbitrators and the American Health Lawyers Association Panel of Neutrals. He has been listed in annual editions of The Best Lawyers in America in Commercial Litigation, and in 2009, was named "Toledo Best Lawyers Bet-the-Company Litigator of the Year" in The Best Lawyers in America. 

He is listed in annual editions of Ohio Super Lawyers and is also a life member of the United States Sixth District Court of Appeals Judicial Conference. Additionally, Cooper is a member of the Toledo Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and the American Bar Association.

Simmons is associate vice president of Community Relations and Philanthropy for Limited Brands, Inc. A 1995 graduate of Ohio University, Simmons began working with Limited Brands as a college intern. Returning to the company in 2007, she oversees $10 million in annual grant-making through the Limited Brands Foundation, multi-million dollar associate giving campaigns and the company's volunteerism program, which donates more than 11,000 service hours per year.

In addition to a journalism degree from the E.W. Scripps College of Communication, Simmons is a graduate of the inaugural class of the African-American Leadership Academy, a program of The Academy of Leadership and Governance in Columbus and a certificate in community involvement from Boston College.

Simmons has held leadership positions with I Know I Can, Project GRAD Columbus, Community Shelter Board, The Ohio State University, Cleveland Municipal School District and the United Way of Central Ohio.
