United Appeal spotlight: Athens CASA/GAL gives voice to neglected children in the court system

Between Nov.1 and Dec. 24, the Ohio University community is participating in United Appeal’s “United 2 Give, United 2 Help” fundraising campaign. Through this editorial series, Compass seeks to highlight some of the community agencies that will benefit from OHIO’s giving.

Even for the most seasoned professionals, dealing with the court system can be nerve-wracking. Imagine, then, how children must feel when faced with the immense stress of working their way through the legal system.

Luckily, Athens Court Appointed Special Advocate/ Guardian Ad Litem (CASA/GAL) is there to help.

As a local non-profit with state and national affiliations, Athens CASA/GAL is made up of community volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to advocate for abused or neglected children as they move through the court process.

Rebecca Miller has served as director of Athens CASA/GAL for almost a decade. In this role, Miller oversees all areas of programming, as well as public relations and fundraising. She also works closely with partner agencies to ensure that the children’s best interests are kept at the forefront of all decisions and actions.

Compass recently spoke with Miller about Athens CASA/GAL and the organization’s first year of involvement with the United Appeal campaign.

Why did CASA/GAL partner with United Appeal?

Miller: United Appeal's mission is to promote and support organizations that will assist people in meeting their basic needs. CASA/GAL volunteers work alongside key organizations to ensure the very basic needs of child safety, stability and permanency are a reality for all children in the Athens community.

How does United Appeal help the OHIO community?

Miller: United Appeal has an incredible reputation in the community, so there is considerable notoriety that comes with being a member organization, which offers additional validity to member organizations. Additionally, we are a very small program with very limited funds, so the financial support that United Appeal provides will be a valuable asset to directly support local volunteers and children.

How can OHIO get involved?

Miller: There are many ways to support United Appeal, the most obvious being a financial donation. Getting involved directly with one of the many member organizations is also a tremendous way to support the organization and the Athens community.
