United Appeal invites OHIO to campaign kickoff

Ohio University will host an event at the Scripps Amphitheater from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, to kick off the University's participation in the United Appeal for Athens County's (UA) annual fund drive.

The afternoon will feature music, food, fun, and information.

The event will feature music by DJ A-Roc, followed by performances from OHIO’s a cappella groups, Section 8 and Title 9. Autumn-themed snacks, popcorn, and beverages will be provided.

United Appeal is a charitable organization that uses its funds to better the lives of the residents of Athens County and provide them with their every day needs. Donations given to United Appeal are used to help organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Athens County Food Pantry, and Habitat for Humanity, Girl Scouts and United Seniors of Athens County.

Representatives from United Appeal agencies will attend the campaign kickoff event. These representatives will be there to show donors how important their gifts are and the various ways donations will be used throughout the county.

There are a number of ways OHIO employees can give.

"Ohio University employees can donate through payroll deduction where they specify an amount to be withheld from each paycheck for one year," explained Pam Harvey, United Appeal’s executive director. "OHIO makes payments of these pledges to UA on a regular basis and we rely on these regular checks from generous donors."

She explained the various other ways people can donate. Donations can be made with cash, check or credit card. Credit card donations can be given over the phone, on a pledge card or through Paypal.

Pledge materials will be sent out to OHIO faculty and staff prior to the event. Harvey stressed that any amount of participation is appreciated.

"For many of us, we know friends, neighbors, and colleagues who have been lifted up by the services provided by United Appeal and its member organizations, which help children, the elderly, and families," said Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis. "That is why, as a university community, we partner with United Appeal to support its campaign. Leading by example, we can make a difference in our community and lift up those who are in need."

The first 20 donors will receive Avalanche Pizza gift certificates. All other donors will be rewarded for their generosity with United Appeal tote bags.
