Performing Arts Series to host six October events


There will be plenty of opportunities to laugh, dance and sing along at Ohio University this October.

OHIO will host six events in October for the Performing Arts Series and the Concert Series.

 "Sales for all the shows are going very well so far and we are really excited where we’re at," said Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director of the Campus Involvement Center, "Second City is our first show and is on Parents Weekend. It will likely be a sellout or close to it."

Organizers chose the events by seeking input from students, faculty, staff and Athens area residents. The Campus Involvement Center collaborates with a number of organizations on the Athens campus to host the events.

Second City, 10/1
Second City is an improv-based sketch comedy show that has turned out comedians like Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Murray. Some mature content may not be appropriate for a younger audience. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium. All tickets are $18 for general admission seating.

Miles Davis Experience, 10/5

Miles Davis is known as one of jazz music’s most iconic innovators. This performance pairs up with one of jazz’s rising stars, the Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet with recreations of Davis' timeless and revolutionary original music from the 1950s. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students, $18 for seniors and $20 for general admission.

Mountain Stage, 10/9

Larry Groce hosts a live two-hour public radio show that will be recorded for future broadcast on NPR stations across the United States, XM radio and Voice of America. Performers will include the Jayhawks, Hot Tuna, Karan Casey and John Doyle, Ha Ha Tonka and Southeast Engine. The show starts at 7 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are $25 for the first 10 rows and $15 for the remaining rows.

Mary Chapin Carpenter, 10/16
Five-time Grammy Award winning singer/ songwriter, Mary Chapin Carpenter will be taking the stage to perform some of her timeless classics. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are $40 for the first 10 rows, $25 for remaining floor seats, and $20 for balcony seating.

Campus Consciousness Tour, 10/18
Janelle Monáe is considered to be one of the most in-demand acts of 2011. She inspires students with her environmental campaign set in a rock concert tour atmosphere. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are $35 for the first 10 rows and $20 for the remainder.

Aziz Ansari, 10/22
Actor/standup comedian Aziz Ansari is known for his role on the popular television series "Parks and Recreation." He has been in movies, including "I Love You Man," "Get Him to the Greek" and the newly released, "30 Minutes or Less." The performance will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are $35 for the first 10 rows and $25 for the remainder.
