Local artists' exhibit begins Tuesday

Seven Athens area artists will soon have their work on display in "Connections," an art exhibit that includes fiber pieces, photography, ceramics, pressed flowers, paintings, paper collage, and glass.

The exhibit runs Sept. 6 through Nov. 17, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Multicultural Center Art Gallery on the second floor of Baker University Center. A "Meet the Artists Reception" will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.

The show's theme represents many connections: friendship between artists, the connecting of cultures – Romanian, American, Russian; the connection artists have with their materials while they create; and the connections artists hope to make with the viewer through their artwork.

Another connection is noteworthy – town and gown. The Multicultural Center has opened its doors to this exhibit that is being curated by Simona Aizicovici, an Athens resident who was born in Romania.

Olga Molchanova, originally from Russia, and Kari Gunter-Seymour are both photographers. But the intention, scale and subject matter of their work could not be different.

Aizicovici and Lynda Berman both use pressed flowers and leaves in their work but the former uses the botanicals as "paint" to create representational pictures and the latter composes a paper collage featuring a single botanical specimen as the focal point.

Amanda Buchanan's fused glass jewelry is locally famous and her focus for this exhibit is the circle both as a design element and as a metaphor. Lanna Galloway has recently evolved new sewing machine techniques resulting in a new direction in her fabric pieces. Ceramic artist and owner of Green Mantle Studio, Kelly Lawrence's passion is evident in all she creates.
