The Ohio University community mourns the loss of student Gloria M. Dawes, 22, who died in an auto accident on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Dawes, a native of Adena, Ohio, was a senior special education major in the Patton College of Education and Human Services with a minor in dance. She also was vice president of the Students' Council for Exceptional Children and a member of the Ohio University Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization.
"It is always difficult when one of our shining stars' light fades too soon," said Renée Middleton, dean of the Patton College of Education and Human Services. "She will always be a part of the Patton College family and will be deeply missed by her student colleagues, faculty and staff who were blessed to know her. Our memories of Gloria will sustain us for the challenges of the coming days ahead."
Dawes' obituary in the Wheeling News-Register described her as an "adventurous and loving spirit who lived life to the fullest." It also said that she was "talented, creative, and loved to dance" and was a "dreamer and a believer."
Dianne Gut, program coordinator for the Special Education program and Dawes' academic adviser, said Dawes was a very unique person who always thought outside the box to find ways to connect with people.
"She was a really energetic person who was a leader and not a follower," Gut said. "She was so well liked by her classmates and the people in the college. Her impact is evident in how much people are hurting right now."
Ryan Lombardi, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, offered his thoughts on the death.
"We are deeply saddened by this sudden loss. On behalf of Ohio University, we express our condolences to Gloria's family and friends," Lombardi said.
Calling hours for Dawes will be held at Heslop Funeral Home in Martins Ferry, Ohio, 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. The funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 1
p.m. Friday at St. Adalbert's Catholic Church in Dillonvale, Ohio.
