Athens 'Under the Elms' Summer Concert Series kicks off June 20

Looking to fill summer evenings with live, open-air music? The College of Fine Arts will present the "Under the Elms" Summer Concert Series with six free concerts, beginning Wednesday, June 20, and each consecutive week until Wednesday, July 18, with an additional performance on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Each of these outdoor concerts begins at 7 p.m. on the College Green adjacent to Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium (inside of the auditorium in case of rain) off East Union St.

The music director and principal conductor of "Under the Elms" is Ohio University Director of Bands Andrew Trachsel.

"'Under the Elms' has a long-standing history here at Ohio University and the community support to match," said Trachsel. "Each year we bring in special guests and conductors which allows us to offer a variety of vibrant and inspiring programming for each concert."

The "Under the Elms" concerts on the College Green have been a community tradition since the 1940s and is highly anticipated by University, community, regional and alumni patrons alike. The "Under the Elms" Concert Band, or "Communiversity Band," comprises Ohio University faculty, students and alumni, as well as community members from Athens and surrounding communities. The ensemble rehearses one night a week prior to each performance.

"Every year we have around 100 members in the Under the Elms Concert Band and each individual brings a diverse set of musical talents," said Trachsel. "It’s very enriching for Ohio University and the College of Fine Arts to be able to have this bond with our community and its members. I always look forward to working with our summer Concert Band to provide free music events to the Athens community."

All of these events, generously supported by the College of Fine Arts, are open to all and free to the public. In the event of rain, concerts will be held in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics to the concerts.
