Mozart on the Green Festival and Academy starts Aug. 8

The Mozart on the Green Festival and Academy, an intensive one-week chamber music festival inspired by the spirit of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the beautiful surroundings of Athens, will take place in Athens from Aug. 8 through13.

The Mozart on the Green Festival and Academy will host renowned musicians from around the continent to teach young musicians during the day and present world-class chamber music concerts in the evenings. The evening performances, hour-long casual concerts hosted nightly in several different locations around the city, promise to deliver delightful and inspiring sounds for audiences of all ages.

The festival and academy are the creation of Steven Huang, director of orchestral studies. Upon learning about Huang’s desire to start such a festival, Michael Carrera, associate professor of cello, suggested that his own nonprofit, the Juniper Music Festival, could help to make Huang’s dream a reality. The Juniper Music Festival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing classical music to smaller or underserved communities and the pairing seemed natural.

Because of the generous support from Juniper, world-class musicians will join OHIO faculty artists to teach academy students during the day and present community performances at night. The guest artists include Colin Maier, oboist with Canada’s Quartetto Gelato; Tim Christie, viola, and Maria Sampen, violin, both from the University of Puget Sound; OHIO alumnus Ray Feener, baritone, and Natalia Rivera, collaborative pianist, both from the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Athens resident Christina McGann, international solo violinist; and Pablo Mahave-Veglia, cello and baroque cello, Grand Valley State University.

All performances are free and open to the public and will culminate with the Festival Academy student performance on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7pm in the Glidden Recital Hall on the OHIO Athens campus. The complete listing of performances is as follows:

  • Monday, Aug. 8, 7-8 p.m., Glidden Recital Hall
