Between May 14 and 22, Ohio University will celebrate its global heritage during International Week 2011. Read on for highlights of OHIO's century-old tradition of international education, outreach and hospitality.
1896 Saki Taro Murayama traveled to Ohio University in search of an education, becoming the school’s first international student
1964 Ohio University establishes the Center for International Studies
1976 Ohio University hosts the first International Week, culminating with the popular International Street Fair on Court Street
1979 Ohio University and the Malaysia government partner with 38 corporations to establish the Tun Abdul Razak Chair in Southeast Asian Studies – the first endowed chair of its kind established by any American university with support from a foreign government
1979 To honor Ohio University's 175th anniversary, Chubu University donates 175 Yoshino Cherry trees that line campus and the Hocking River. Chubu increased that number to 200 trees for OHIO's bicentennial in 2004
1994 The African Studies Program is designated a U.S. Department of Education National Resource Center for Language and Areas Studies
2004 The newly renovated and renamed Yamada International House opens as a result of a bicentennial gift to refurbish the home of the Center for International Studies
2005 Alden Library's Center for International Collections acquires the David K. Wyatt Collection, adding a significant amount of Thai materials to the strong holdings on Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. Alden Library’s international collections rank among the strongest in the nation.
2009 854 Ohio University students studied in 44 nations and 66 OHIO faculty traveled internationally with students
2010 International undergraduate student enrollment at Ohio University increases from 197 in 2003 to 744 in 2010. In total, OHIO has 1,483 international students from 101 countries
2011 Ohio University opens the Walter International Education Center, housing the Office of Education Abroad and the International Student and Faculty Services office

• Approximately 2.25 percent of OHIO's enrolled students participate in a study abroad program – more than double the national average of one percent
• Peoples from nations around the world are celebrated every year during International Week, with special programming intended to bring aspects of a range of cultures to campus. This signature event allows students from diverse backgrounds to experience and learn from the traditions of their friends, classmates, and fellow members of the Athens community.
• On the eve of his inauguration, President Barack Obama was presented with a unique gift from Ohio University’s Center for African Studies. Cornel West, a keynote speaker at OHIO’s recent conference on progressive Islam, delivered a specially made kente to Obama on behalf of the University. The kente is a Ghanaian ceremonial cloth historically reserved for royalty; today it symbolizes pan-African culture and heritage. The gift was embroidered by Interior Services staff with the Ohio University logo and personalized with a congratulatory message.
