Great job Barbara Grueser!

Meet February Classified EOTM Barbara Grueser

Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus.

How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?

I was shocked and very honored to win this award.

What is your job title and how long have you worked at the University?

I am currently in the Department of English and have been an administrative assistant for 15 years. I've worked at Ohio University for 20 years.

What are the best things about your job?

I like meeting and working with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and staff. Answering the phone can also be exciting. I once talked with Paul Newman's close friend, a famous movie producer, and recently I talked with one of our graduate school applicants from Butler University the same evening their men's basketball team played UConn for the NCAA championship.

What is your hometown?

I grew up in the Bradbury (in back of Middleport), Shade area in Meigs County, Ohio.

What are your long-term goals?

I want to work until my children have graduated from Ohio University.

What was the last good book you read?

I love reading cookbooks and finding new recipes. The cookbook I received as a gift for being named Employee of the Month was very exciting to me. I found a recipe in it from a former boss.

If you weren't in your present job, you would probably be working as a ______.

Not sure what to say. I would in some way be working with young adults. They are our "tomorrow" and  I want to encourage them to do their best, be honest, and do all they can to make things better in words or actions.

What things in life are the most important to you?

My faith, family, and friends are most important to me.

What are your next vacation plans?

I'll probably go to New York to visit my daughter.

What do you do in your spare time?

Like any other wife and mother of six children, I keep trying to stay on top of things. In the summer I pick produce from the garden.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I don't have any secrets.

What type of music do you listen to?

Whatever my kids are listening to. Music is such a great way to express what one thinks and feels.

What is your favorite saying or quote?

"Treat others the way you want to be treated."
