2011 Polar Plunge attracts record numbers

Charity event surpasses $30,000 goal

More than 250 people plunged into the cold waters at Stroud's Run State Park on Saturday as part of the fourth annual Ohio University Polar Plunge.

The event, which is sponsored by the Ohio University Police Department and Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, raised more than $33,000 for Special Olympics Ohio.

"We had about 100 more plungers and raised $10,000 more than last year, so the event exceeded all of our expectations," said Cathy Hart, OUPD communication officer. "We know we set the bar high for next year, but we'll keep trying to make the event bigger and better with the help and support of the local and campus communities."

Special Olympics Ohio (SOOH) is a non-profit organization that provides yearlong training and competition to more than 23,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
