Campus mediation training starts Feb. 11

Registration deadline is Wednesday

The Athens Area Mediation Service is sponsoring four free mediation skills training sessions for Ohio University employees and students beginning Feb. 11.

The sessions will teach people how to effectively handle conflict situations. The Athens Area Mediation Service defines mediation as a thoughtfully structured process that can be used to help people resolve their own conflicts and design their own solutions.

"[Mediation] means better relationships, less stress and more effective work," said John Schmieding, director of the Athens Area Mediation Service. "We all encounter conflict in a variety of settings and the usual methods of ignoring and hoping it goes away doesn't work that well," he said. "The goal of this program is for people to get some awareness of their own reactions to conflict and learn to respond to conflict in ways that really work."

The training sessions will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each Friday through March 4, at the Ohio University Human Resources Training Center. Registration is open through Feb. 9, with limited
space available. AAMS recommends that registrants attend all four sessions, but it is not required.

More than 400 Ohio University faculty, staff and students, have attended past mediation sessions, which use role-playing exercises and small group discussions as training tools.

The sessions are being offered free of charge because of financial support provided to AAMS by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.
