From staff reports
University Human Resources Leadership and Staff Development will launch two variations of its Managerial Essentials program in September.
The new program, which was first offered this summer, examines leadership from an operational perspective, while enhancing managerial skills. Managerial Essentials targets one major management issue per session and is intended to deliver practical, "nuts and bolts" information that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of managers.
The three-and-a-half hour sessions include interactive learning, case studies and examples from the field. Participants will engage in discussions and activities with peers and subject matter experts regarding relevant issues in the university workplace.
Participants who would benefit most from the workshops include experienced or new managers who seek a formal learning environment that focuses on management skills, provides networking opportunities and enhances overall communication skills.
Participants can pursue a 10-session professional development certificate or sign-up for individual workshop topics that meet their professional needs. For the certificate program, participants must complete 10 sessions in one quarter as a cohort member or complete the 10 individual sessions over the course of the academic year (visit www.ohio.edu/hr for the schedules).
Due to limited capacity in each workshop, nominations are required for program participation. Nominations may be submitted by supervisors or aspiring participants with supervisor approval. All program sessions will be presented by subject matter experts from the university community.
On Sept. 15, the program will kick off with an interactive session designed to help employees better understand their individual strengths and weaknesses and how they impact management style.
The Managerial Essentials program will cover areas such as:
• Difficult Conversations
• Finance and Budget
• Strategic Planning
• Project Management
• University Policies and Employment Law
• Diversity and Workplace Climate
• Performance Management
• Team Building
Program completion will result in a Managerial Essentials Certificate of Completion. The cost of participation, which includes all materials and assessments, is $35 per individual workshop or $350 for the 10-session series.
Participants who register for the 10-session series before Sept. 30 will receive a free session for a total of $315. A small number of seats will be held in each session for individuals who require a more flexible time commitment.
Supervisors or managers interested in the nomination process should visit the University Human Resources website at www.ohio.edu/hr/skill/LDP.cfm or contact Brent Patterson at firstname.lastname@example.org or Teri Combs at email@example.com for additional information.
