Southern Campus celebrates 30 years of the Academy of Excellence Program

Who would not want the chance to be a crime scene investigator? Or delve into the deep unknown waters of the ocean, discover what life was really like in colonial America, or explore the vast expanse of outer space?

Young students will have a chance to do each of these and more during the Academy of Excellence this summer at Ohio University-Southern. The academy, which runs July 26 through Aug. 6, will provide students entering 1st-8th grades the opportunity to participate in courses that appeal to their intellectual and creative needs. This year is especially exciting because they are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the academy.

The Ohio University-Southern Academy of Excellence program has provided opportunities for academically advanced, highly motivated and talented elementary school students to explore special, high-interest topics in a college setting since 1980.

"Being at the university at a younger age students become familiar with the campus setting. This increases their chances of continuing their education and pursuing a degree," says Janet Wagner, coordinator of the Learning, Assessment and Career Resource Center, as well as the director of the Academy of Excellence for the last four years.

To help Ohio University-Southern celebrate 30 years of excellence, organizers of the program welcome all past students, teachers and aides to a 30-year academy reunion party at the conclusion of this summer's academy.

"Former participants in the Academy of Excellence recall their activities with great fondness, and several have told me of volunteering with the program after they were no longer eligible to participate," said Southern Campus Dean Bill Willan. "It's a real testament to the program that so many have gone on to higher education, quite a few here at Ohio University-Southern. The campus takes pride in that legacy."
