Annual "Under the Elms" concerts begin June 23

Student participants can earn two free credit hours

The annual “Under the Elms” summer concert series begins June 23 and will feature an exciting line up of music, guest conductors, soloists and a special guest ensemble.

All performances for this long-standing tradition are at 7 p.m. Wednesday nights on the College Green adjacent to Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. The weekly concert will be moved inside the auditorium in case of rain.

A feature of the concerts are visits from guest conductors around the world. This year, the series welcomes Wendy McCallum, director of bands at Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada, and Thomas Rohrer, director of bands at Utah State University.

As a special add-on performance to the series, the Ohio National Guard 122nd Army Band, the largest National Guard band in the country, will perform at 7 p.m. on July 1 as part of a two-week tour of Southeast Ohio.

The series line-up is:

  • June 23; “Raise the Curtain: Music for Stage and Screen”
  • June 30; “Celebrate America”
  • July 7; Dr. Wendy McCallum, Brandon University, Manitoba, Canada
  • July 14; Dr. Thomas Rohrer, Utah State University
  • July 21; “Marching ‘Round the World”

Special add-on performance:

  • July 1; The Ohio National Guard 122nd Army Band

The band is open to the public and you may earn two undergraduate or graduate credit hours for participating. The university offers a tuition waiver for those credits.

All rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 to 10:00 p.m. in Glidden 101. Dates for rehearsals are June 22, 29, July 6, 13 and 20. Please contact Director of Bands Andrew Trachsel at 593-1670 or trachsel@ohio.edu or Helen Kasler at 593-4244 or kasler@ohio.edu for more information.
