On Thursday, expect Outlook to look different – very different. On April 29, University Communications and Marketing (UCM) will unveil Ohio University Compass, a new source for campus news and information.
During a survey conducted last spring with the aid of the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, UCM collected 594 completed responses. Of those surveyed, 94 percent indicated that they read Outlook, with 76 percent saying they read it once a week or more. Almost 70 percent of respondents said their top news source of OHIO news was Outlook.
With a large readership that consists of university faculty, staff, students and Athens community members, UCM is constantly trying to better serve the needs of this diverse audience. That is where Ohio University Compass and Compass Points come in.
Outlook readers asked for a clearly defined purpose and audience and with its clear and easy to navigate sections, Ohio University Compass delivers. Readers also asked for more categorization of content. In Ohio University Compass, readers will be able to easily find the latest breaking news in the "Headlines" category and locate a myriad of other topics in their simple, clear categories.
In January of 2010, the Outlook e-mail began including Ohio University students. But, there was still a need to provide information and stories tailored for the busy faculty and staff on OHIO's campuses. Compass Points is poised to fulfill that need.
Compass Points is a biweekly e-mail newsletter that will begin appearing in the e-mail inboxes of faculty and staff on Thursday, May 6.
Ohio University Compass and Compass Points will continue to provide the news the OHIO community has come to rely on. They will be especially concerned with highlighting areas of interest indicated in the survey. These included:
People profiles on achievements by faculty, staff, students and alumni
Campus events and other things to do
Updates on Ohio University policies and procedures
A request the respondents made was to see more multimedia content on Outlook. Since the survey results were received, UCM has strived to increase the amount of multimedia stories that were told. This commitment will continue into Ohio University Compass, with the inclusion of a special category just for multimedia work on the news Web site's homepage.
Many of these subjects are of particular interest to Ohio University employees. These types of stories will be introduced to their audience in a shortened format through Compass Points, and link back to full text articles on Ohio University Compass.
Both publications have a clean and simple design aesthetic to facilitate readers' experience and search for the news they need. Events and professional achievements will be clearly displayed along the left side of the Ohio University Compass homepage, increasing the visibly of these widely-read sections.
In the survey, 75 percent of respondents indicated that they were satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the Outlook. Building on that tradition of excellence, UCM is proud to introduce the two publications to the university.
