Sonny Vaccaro Keynotes 2013 Darren Butler Sports Business Forum
The Center for Sports Administration at Ohio University will host Sonny Vaccaro as keynote speaker for the 2013 Darren Butler Sports Business Forum to be held Fri., Oct. 18 in Walter Hall on the campus of Ohio University. Vaccaro will speak at 5:30 p.m. and prior to, will be available to the media.
John Paul "Sonny" Vaccaro, has played a pivotal role in the history of basketball. Initially as the broker that signed Michael Jordan to his first sneaker deal with Nike, and later as an outspoken advocate for reform in college sports.
"The OHIO College of Business's Center for Sports Administration brings real world sports industry experience into the classroom," said James Kahler, executive director for the Center. "Sonny is an icon in sports marketing. Our students and alumni will greatly benefit from his perspective – both as marketing mastermind and now as a force for reform in college athletics."
Vaccaro has been an active member of athletics reform groups including the Drake Group. He has been included in several books and movies about the growth of amateur basketball into a multi-million dollar industry.
ESPN's Lester Munson calls Vaccaro "the notorious former shoe peddler who essentially invented 'Air Jordan' for Nike and scored mammoth contracts with numerous universities for Nike, adidas and Reebok before he awakened to the monster he had built and now seeks to instill some measure of reform in college sports."
Other speakers at the Darren Butler Sports Business Forum include Jack Vivian, president of JRV Consulting, Don Hardman, a sport and entertainment executive currently servicing as the chief stadia officer for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015, and several others
