Proposal Preparation

 

PROPOSAL PREPARATION CHECKLIST


First Steps at a Glance

    * Plan ahead a few weeks, a few months, or a year, depending on the scope of the project and type of grant.
    * Call us at 597-1263 early for funding sources, essential contacts, grant writing assistance, etc.
    * Solicit letters of collaboration or financial support.
    * Update your bio, current and pending support form, and publication list.

 

    1.  Request for Proposal (RFP), Program Announcement (PA) or Other Relevant Guidelines

    * Meet with CHSP associate dean for research.
    * Submit letter of intent if one is required.
    * Check LEO to see if other faculty members have secured support from the funder of interest. If so, ask to see the proposal.
    * Prepare questions for discussion with grant program officer.

 

    2.  Collaborators/Partners

    * Forward the RFP/application materials to all potential co-investigators, collaborators, consultants and/or partners.
    * Determine type of personnel and level of effort, e.g., PI, co-PI, key personnel, consultant(s), as determined by each person’s precise role.
    * If subawards are anticipated (such as to other universities or community partners), or subcontracts to outside vendors, plan ahead and discuss with ORSP Pre-Award Manager Judi Rioch.

 

   3.  Technical Proposal

    * Contact ORSP Pre-Award Manager Judi Rioch as soon as possible to help you develop the proposal budget: rioch@ohio.edu or 593-9985.
    * Develop proposal outline using the RFP as your guide.
    * Identify and select writers for each section.
    * Determine review and editing timeline.
    * Draft specific aims, allowing time for edits and revisions.
    * Access “boilerplate” facilities language from ORSP Web site or associate dean for research.

 

    4.  Design and Statistics Consultation

    * Consult CHSP or other biostatistician for power analysis, design considerations and statistical plan.
    * Obtain internal review of rough draft from colleagues and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.

 

    5.  Finishing Touches (7-10 days before submission deadline)

    * Be sure University ORSP Pre-Award Manager reviews and approves your budget.
    * Submit to CHSP Dean’s Office for substantive and stylistic review well in advance of the submission deadline.
    * Prepare the electronic transmittal form.
    * Submit the proposal to ORSP Pre-Award Manager Judi Rioch at least three days before official deadline:  rioch@ohio.edu or 593-9985.
    * Final signatures: Jennifer Horner, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in CHSP and Shane Gilkey, Assistant VP for Research in ORSP.
