Kevin Davis, Director of Community Engagement

Extend the boundaries of Ohio University to enrich the quality of lives, especially for individuals in underserved and vulnerable populations, through interprofessional and community collaborations”

The statement above is a direct quote from the mission statement of College of Health Sciences and Professions and is what defines and shapes the Department of Community Engagement. The staff, students, faculty, volunteers and community partners who interact with the Department of Community Engagement are committed to advancing the needs of underserved, rural and vulnerable populations throughout Southeastern Ohio.

Within the Department of Community Engagement our main focal area is forging and developing partnerships which foster community outreach. These partnerships, whether they are with health, social, educational or public agencies, serve as an opportunity for the College of Health Sciences and Professions to provide service learning and volunteer opportunities for our students and community based research opportunities for our faculty. Therefore, the students and faculty can truly engage with underserved, rural and vulnerable populations throughout the region in ways that will promote an understanding and appreciation of the culture, values and lifestyles of the local area. While these service learning, volunteer or community based research partnerships are occurring is when the students, the faculty and the local community share information, resources and services that ultimately equals success for all parties involved.

Our Kids on Campus community partnership is the cornerstone of our community engagement outreach. It is a longstanding summer and afterschool program which provides educational, nutritional and recreational opportunities to economically disadvantaged and academically at-risk children in Athens County. Other very important examples of the College of Health Sciences and Professions commitment to community outreach are; the Live Healthy Appalachia community-university partnership, the Ohio University Therapy Associates Clinic, the Athletic Training Program and Wellworks. We are constantly exploring and striving to develop new programs which will benefit our students, our faculty and the surrounding community.
