Dear New OHIO Student:

Soon you will be participating in the Bobcat Student Orientation at Ohio University.

The information here is important to you if your major requires you to take general chemistry (CHEM 151, 152, 153). You MUST take the Chemistry Placement test (see information below) if you major code is one of the following:

Please see www.ohio.edu/chemistry or the Bobcat Student Orientation site www.ohio.edu/orientation/ for more details.

The exam is administered the first day of orientation, from 8:45 – 9:45 a.m. in W115 Grover Center. Please bring a pencil, regular calculator, and a photo i.d. to the test.

The chemistry placement exam is a diagnostic test of 60 questions, 20 on basic algebra, 20 on general science, and 20 on the high school chemistry. The material on the exam is not specific course material but designed as an assessment of basic skills that a student needs for a fundamental course such as Chem 151.

Those who score 34 or better (out of 60 questions) on the placement exam will be judged to have a background for potential success in Chem 151. Those who score less than 34 on the exam are not yet ready to begin the Chem 151 series and will take Chem 150 in the fall followed by Chem 151.

Sincerely,

Lauren E.H. McMills Assistant Professor and Director of General Chemistry
