Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ohio University. Here, world-class research can be performed in a personalized environment conducive to reaching your goals and maximizing your potential.
Our department has established research programs in the traditional areas of analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Many faculty members have established research programs that investigate cross-disciplinary problems. We have created two interdisciplinary areas of research to promote the nature of these interfacial scientific endeavors. These two focus areas are Chemical Analysis and Structure and Chemistry of Biological Systems and Processes. The two focus areas aid both faculty and students by identifying new funding sources and by offering employment advantages for our graduates.
Our department has experienced tremendous growth in the past five years with the addition of nine new faculty members. We expect to complete several more hires in the next few years. The department has seen an increase in external funding of greater than 200% over this same time period. Along with increased departmental funding, we are seeking to increase our number of qualified graduate students. We feel that we can expand our program, while maintaining our friendly atmosphere and low student-to-faculty ratio (presently averaging 3-4 students per faculty member).
Full-year financial support (including a tuition waiver) is available for all graduate students. We offer a highly competitive stipend for students offered a teaching assistantship. Highly qualified students may be eligible for fellowships that provide additional stipend support of $1,000 - $4,000. Individual research groups may have research assistantships available that offer stipend support without teaching responsibilities.
We invite you to visit the OU Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, and meet our faculty and graduate students. We are located in Athens, Ohio, part of the Hocking Hills region of Southeastern Ohio. We will be happy to arrange a visit and reimburse some expenses in traveling to Athens. Online application forms for graduate study in Chemistry (U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident or International) are available.
We encourage you to contact us by E-mail so that we may send you additional information regarding the department and Ohio University.
