Chem 150 is a new course offered for the first time Fall 2005. The course is designed to prepare students who will be majoring in the science and engineering programs that require Chem 151. These students have a need to establish a firm background based on the results of the Chem 151 Placement Exam. The course will focus on concepts at a foundation level including measurement, classification of matter, stoichiometry, electron configuration, the Periodic Table, and chemical bonding.
Prerequisite:
MATH PLACEMENT LEVEL 2 OR MATH 113 OR CONCURRENT & NOT CHEM 121
This means that the results of math placement test put you at Level 2. If you placed at Level 1 then you can take Chem 150 if you are also enrolled in Math 113. You cannot earn credit for Chem 150 if you have passed Chem 121.
Registration:
Two registration call numbers (one for lecture and one for lab) Chem 150 (lecture) Call Number 07070 Chem 150 Lab Call Numbers (07071-07078)
Required Materials:
The book is loose-leaf and designed for this course. It is based on Cracolice, Mark S, and Peters, Edward I, “Introductory Chemistry, An Active Learning Approach” 2nd Edition, Thomson Brooks/Cole, 2004 but it comes with a special PIN (personal identification number) that allows you to do your on-line homework. You should not buy any other version of this book because you cannot submit your homework for a grade without the PIN. ISBN #0495136808
A laboratory coat (any lab coat that covers you from shoulders to knees with long sleeves is OK). The coats in the book store are washable and cost $18-$30. The Chem Dept stockroom sells Tyvek lab coats for about $4 which should last you through one quarter and perhaps the full year.
Laboratory goggles, OSHA approved. The goggles must cover your eyes with side shields and have the number ANSI Z87.1 imprinted on them. Most standard goggles manufactured after 1995 bear this imprint, but check yours carefully. Many students wear Visorgogs that are comfortable over regular glasses. You need to have lab goggles that are comfortable enough to wear for 3 hours without taking them off as you will wear your goggles at ALL times in the lab. Prices for goggles are $8-$15. If you had goggles from high school chemistry lab, they are probably OK.
A breakage card, $45 purchased at the Cashier's Office, first floor Chubb Hall. This pays for your chemicals and consumable materials. On the first day of lab, $35 is punched off of your card. You then have the card with you for the rest of the quarter and if you break glassware or lose an item from your drawer, the cost is punched off of your card.
A scientific calculator. Any calculator is OK for chemistry. Many students have the Texas Instrument calculators of the TI 80 series and use them for math class and chemistry.
