Region 7! This year we are offering over 20 educational sessions for you to choose from covering all sorts of content areas. Presenters are coming to us from all over the region, and we are very excited to get you pumped up to Make a Difference on your campus and community. ACUI Student Programs: Finding out how you can make a difference for students

ACUI has student programs that enrich a student's collegiate experience. These programs: College Bowl, Poetry Slam, and Recreation and Leisure Activities, provide opportunities for students to compete against others at their institution as well as regionally and nationally. This session will include an overview of each of these programs and will discuss how you can be successful in integrating them into your student union.

Advising Today: What students Need

Baker back of House Tour

Ohio University's new Baker Center is a $60 million, state of-the-art facility. Join us as we tour the facility, including the back of the house areas. Conference attendees will learn of the challenges and opportunities that face the Center staff and how we attempt to provide the best possible service for students, faculty, staff and visitors to Baker University Center

Don't sell a program to students, make them want to buy in!

You can simply list "Dave Matthews Live! On campus" and you will have thousands of students in attendance. Many other programs are not something you can just list on a flyer and have huge attendance. This session will show the audience not only how to promote those "hard to sell" programs, but also how to adapt those programs to a different audience.

Effective Partnerships: Campus Vendors and the University Union as Partners

University Unions depend on outside vendors or other departments to provide a range of services to the campus community. Developing effective partnerships that are mutually beneficial is important for the success of both sides. This session will present initiatives taken to ensure effective partnerships between the EMU Student Center and its vendors to benefit the Campus.

From Dream to Reality: The New Baker Center

Ohio University's vision for a new Baker Center was realized through careful planning, strategic funding initiatives, and collaborative decision-making. Student involvement was key to the success of this design process. The planning team will illustrate the design challenges and special planning issues that became part of the interactive game plan for constructing this amazing facility.

From Elvis to Eminem: Connecting Generations in the Workplace

Ever feel like you just can't relate to your co-workers and students? Generation affiliation can greatly affect our decisions, relationships, work ethic, communication preferences, and learning styles. In this session you will gain an understanding of generations and strategies to manage their differences as a means of bridging the "generation gap" in the workplace.

Fundraising ideas for Programming Boards

Money to support campus programming is in short supply. Michigan State University's University Activities Board raises almost $200,000 annually in support of their programming efforts. Come learn about some of UAB's strategies and programs in an environment where there IS NOT a student activity fee.

Future Trends in Student Organization Suite Design

Participants will lean about the outcome study WTW Architects conducted to help forecast future trends in the design of Student Organization suites in Student-Life Facilities. Institutions of various sizes participated in the study and commented on how characteristics of the current generation of students might affect future suite designs.

Having Reflective Conversations with Students: Making Their Experiences Meaningful

We hope that students leave college understanding the impact the experience has had on their future, their beliefs, their values, and their development. Participants will learn about a guide to having reflective conversations that all professionals can use to affirm the significance of our students' own experiences and to reinforce the value of critically reflecting on and interpreting those experiences.

Help, I've Created a Monster! Working with Franken-leaders

Answer honestly - do you know a Franken-leader? Maybe it's an individual you've worked with or maybe it's yourself! This light-hearted and interactive session will combine true stories from participants with developmental and generational theory and will attempt to identify best practices for working with students who actively seek involvement on campus to a point of possibly detracting from their own development as well as that of their peers.

How ACUI Makes a Difference

This session will provide information on tools and services that ACUI provides for its members. Starting with the organization and structure of ACUI, we'll then look at ACUI Info, Content Experts database, Salary Survey, ACUI Forum and other features available on the website, www.acui.org. We hope that by demonstrating these tools, we can show how ACUI can make a difference for you!

LGBTQ Ally Programs - The Setup and Thereafter

Ever want to boost the LGBTQ involvement on your campus? We will discuss the benefits and costs of having an Ally program on campus, how to effectively promote such a program, and what else can be done to most effectively involve and educate the student body as a whole.

Making a Difference in the Lives of Children: Dance Marathon Panel

Dance marathons are growing and growing, and several institutions within our region are holding their own. Is your institution just starting one, or thinking about starting one? Or, are you veterans and want to see what other institutions are doing? Come to this panel discussion, featuring our regional representative from the Children's Miracle Network to expand your knowledge in making a difference in the lives of these special children.

Presenting the Performing Arts

Responding to Campus Tragedy: The Role of the College Union

Colleges and universities are not immune from facing tragic events that have significant impact on the community.  This past spring several universities, including Bluffton University and Virginia Tech, experienced tragic loss on their campuses. This session is meant to discuss an institution’s response to a campus tragedy and specifically, the role that the union played in supporting a grieving community.

Do You Know What it Means to Sound as Smart as you Know you Are? You know you’re smart.  Make sure colleagues & students do too.  Join us for some writing & speaking tips – from a first conference session to an insignificant e-mail that might live on long after you leave.  Novices, experts, & the masses in between will leave feeling confident in their speaking & writing talents, and will share with their staff!

Sustainable Initiatives at Baker Center

The presentation will cover campus sustainability projects currently underway at the new Baker University Center. We will discuss biodegradable service ware in use at our food court and coffee shops, our campus solid waste management strategy, as well as new waster sorting procedures that have been implemented in advance of the launch of an in-vessel composting system. Challenges and opportunities for more ecological operation of university food service areas will be explored.

The Art of Possibility

Explore the possibility that each of us have to be a great leader.  We'll view & discuss Ben Zander's video, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic & prof. at the New England Conservatory, The Art of Possibility.

Working Session on the College Union Standard of the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS)

In this hands-on workshop, delegates will become ad-hoc members of the CAS Review Team for the College Union.  Working in small groups, delegates will provide feedback and propose improvements defining essential and desirable elements of a union program, especially new and altered  expectations in the Standard last revised in 1998.

Yes! You Can Do This For a Living – A Guide to Grad Schools and Careers in Student Affairs

You have either heard it or said it- "Wait? I can do THIS (hall director, student activities, health education, orientation, etc.) for a living?"  Yes, you can and you will leave this session with your questions answered and a top five list of "rules" to live by in selecting a graduate program and career.
