Position: Student Zero Waste Coordinator

Description:

As Zero Waste Coordinator, you will serve as liaison between the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, the Office of Sustainability, the Office of Campus Recycling and Refuse and campus as a whole.

 

You will promote the adoption of the Green Event Guide and provide supplemental education about the concept of zero waste to entities on campus including organizations, Colleges, Offices, and administrators.

Eligibility:

The position is available to full-time undergraduate and graduate students from all majors with a passion for sustainability and drive to make a positive difference at Ohio University.

Terms are one semester long. The first day of school marks the beginning of the semester and the last day of finals week marks the last day of the semester. The Coordinator is not expected to work over holiday breaks, although the option may be available. The Coordinator may be offered a semester extension based on quality performance evaluations.

Responsibilities:

  • Green Event consulting and coordinating
  • Active Green Event Guide promotion
  • Function as a Zero Waste educational resource advisor to students and campus entities
  • Attend and participate in SOUL Waste Reduction sub-committee meetings
  • Develop and track Green Event metrics (i.e. name of event, date, diversion rate, etc.)
  • Advocate for waste-related policy changes on campus
  • Facilitate Bi-weekly check-in meetings with Voinovich School supervisor
  • Email weekly updates to contacts within all three offices
  • Design and implement new initiatives and projects as they arise

Required Skills:

  • Ability to organize events and people 
  • Capacity to work well with a large and diverse set of stakeholders
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Resourceful and creative problem solving skills
  • General knowledge and willingness to learn about Zero Waste and waste minimization
  • Create and present educational materials including flyers and presentations

Experience:

A background in sustainability related classes and campus/community involvement is preferred. Also preferred but not required is a background in event planning for student organizations, residence halls, or the University.

Financial

  • Hourly compensation of $11/ hr. for 10-15 hours a week.
