Humanities Research Fund

Purpose

The College of Arts & Sciences Humanities Research Fund was established from private gifts and royalty funds to support the careers of faculty members in the humanities.

Eligibility

Any Group I full-time humanities faculty member in the Department of African American Studies, Department of Classics and World Religions, Department of English, Department of History, Department of Linguistics, Department of Modern Languages, or Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University may apply for the award.

Criteria

Proposals should address new or relatively new research projects (begun within the last two years) for which there is a defined timeline for completion and planned tangible output. Strong consideration will be given to proposals that could not be completed without the funding. Special consideration will be given to proposals that have sought matching funds or additional sources of funds. Examples of fundable research projects include:

  • Travel to non-circulating library collections.
  • Travel to a national/international venue to present a paper in order to obtain review prior to submission for publication of the paper in a respected venue.
  • Travel to pursue field research.
  • Purchase of materials (e.g., books and software) for a research project.

The proposal should be doubled-spaced and the pages should be numbered. A proposal should include the following:

  1. Cover page. Prepare a cover page containing the information shown on the accompanying sample cover page. The applicant must sign the proposal and obtain the signature of the department chair. Signatures are required only on the original copy. The cover page must be the first page of the proposal. Do not use any other cover or binders.
  2. Narrative. Prepare a brief written narrative of the project purpose or scope, timeframe, expected outcome, and preliminary progress already obtained (if any) on the project.
  3. Budget. Provide an itemized budget for projected costs. There is no limit to the amount of funding requested in a proposal, but it is expected that grants from this fund would fall in the range of $1,000 to $2,500.
  4. Additional funding sources. Indicate the amount of funding requested from other sources, if any.
  5. Curriculum vitae. Include an abbreviated version of a current vita with emphasis on the last five years. Do not submit copies of reprints or preprints of articles or book chapters.

Process

  1. One signed electronic copy of the proposal is to be submitted to Vicki Butcher at butcherv@ohio.edu. The College of Arts & Sciences Research Advisory Committee will review proposals and make a recommendation to the Dean for funding. If deemed appropriate an external reviewer may be asked to review the proposal. The committee will recommend approval or disapproval for funding. In recommending approval the committee may provide for full funding or partial funding of the project.
  2. Proposals may be submitted twice during the year. The deadline for Fall is October 1 and the deadline for Spring is April 1. Please allow sufficient time for review before the anticipated start date of the project.
  3. The committee can recommend changes to these guidelines by action of a majority of the committee. Changes will be approved or disapproved by the Dean.
  4. The Humanities Research Fund was established as of July 1, 2002, and will continue indefinitely as long as funding is available for it. Grants may be renewable. A maximum of $10,000 will be available for each funding cycle.
