Student Organizations for African American Studies

Clubs and organizations provide students with opportunities for community involvement.

African Student Union

The African Student Union exists to promote unity among all African students and Africanists at Ohio University, irrespective of race, color, creed or ethnic and national origin. The African Student Union was established to educate about Africa and its people and celebrate African culture.

Ally

Ally is a group of open-minded people from all backgrounds who strive for the equal treatment of all minority groups, mainly focusing on the issues of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender individuals.

Black Student Communication Caucus

BSCC helps its members to maximize undergrad professional opportunities in various areas of Communication Studies through resume workshops, professional development trips, alumni networking and mentoring programs and an affiliation with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Students with majors outside of those within the Scripps College of Communication are also strongly encouraged to join.

Black Student Cultural Programming Board

The purpose of the Black Student Cultural Programming Board is to provide social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs for African American and other multicultural students. We seek to expose others to the culture, thoughts, and perspectives of African American and multicultural students throughout the Ohio University community, as well as, the Athens community. Our goal is to serve as a resource for the empowerment of the cultural programming at Ohio University.

Black Student Union

The purpose of a Black Student Union is to establish a cohesive bond between the African American student body as well as eliminate the boundaries that we as African American students create for ourselves by not connecting with the resources we have around us. The BSU provides a forum where voices, opinions, goals and differences can be heard in order to strengthen the black community. It also seeks to build political, cultural, professional and educational knowledge while serving as an "umbrella" organization which stands as a support system for all black student organizations on campus.

Hip Hop Congress-Ohio University

The Hip Hop Congress uses culture of Hip Hop to inspire young people to get involved social action, civic service, and cultural creativity. It is the product of a merger of artists and students, music and community.

SHADES

SHADES is dedicated to fostering connections between the multicultural same gender loving, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community at Ohio University. We welcome people of color who are at various stages of understanding the coming out process, questioning or accepting their sexuality and/or understanding the SGL/LGBT community.

STARS (Students Teaching About Racism in Society)

The purpose of S.T.A.R.S. is to facilitate discussion about diversity and all isms (sexism, classism, heterosexism, ethnocentrism etc.) with an emphasis on racial issues. We aim to raise awareness about social justice, and promote racial harmony. Our job is to create a safe, non-threatening environment to allow participants to feel comfortable to express their feelings. Our guiding principle is based on the principle "Each One Teach One."

Student African American Brotherhood

"In order to empower ourselves and promote brotherhood, we, the members of Student African-American Brotherhood, embrace the principles of accountability, self-discipline, proactive leadership, and intellectual development. Through our faith in God, we uphold this mission at all times. I am my brother's keeper, and together, we will rise!" It is by this principle that we operate."
