When Urban Scholar Steven Collier, a native of Cincinnati, entered the Appalachian setting of Ohio University, his first order of business was adapting to his rural surroundings and the expectations that came with being a scholar. Steven did more than adapt. He thrived. Over the four years of his undergraduate education in telecommunications, which included an internship in New York with film director Spike Lee, he developed qualities in himself that he never dreamed were possible. He grew character and most importantly, he learned to believe in himself.

Steven’s story demonstrates what is possible when deserving students have access and opportunity. An Urban or Appalachian scholarship can be the deciding factor for capable students to select Ohio University. Many admitted students would not have access to a college education otherwise.
