Appalachian Regional Cell Conference (ARCC)
Times: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Oct 12, 2012
The goal of this scientific meeting is to foster interactions among students at four universities within the Ohio Valley/mid-Appalachian region: West Virginia University, Marshall University, the University of Kentucky and Ohio University. Each of these institutions has a nucleus of highly-motivated students (and faculty) with common interests in cell biology. An annual, regional meeting of students from these peer institutions will generate unique benefits emerging from a larger gathering of students, such as stimulating professional networking and discovering common research interests leading to future collaborations and the sharing of resources. This meeting will encompass a wide variety of interests within the field of cell biology, including cancer cell biology, neuroscience, cardiovascular disease and biochemistry. We will provide a highly-interactive scientific atmosphere through the use of poster presentations, selected oral presentations and social interactions. Special emphasis will be placed on the particular aspects of cell biology that are of common interest to the participating groups, such as the cytoskeleton, translation and angiogenesis. We are tentatively planning the meeting for Friday, October 12, from 9:00am-4:30pm. We have strategically chosen a date in the Fall so that first-year students from each university who are interested in cell biology can participate. We intend to have this meeting at a central location, Charleston WV, to minimize the differences in driving time from each of the four universities. One representative from each of the participating universities is on the planning committee for the meeting. Input from Graduate Student Organizations and Cell Biology Training Programs at the schools is also being used in the planning and organization of this gathering. The intended audience for this regional meeting is primarily graduate and postdoctoral students; however, faculty and staff from the participating universities will also be invited. We hope to strengthen the interactions by not only bringing students together, but also by uniting faculty at these institutions. It is our intent to determine how effective and interactive this one-day regional meeting is with the hope of holding the meeting annually. To help with future planning, participants will be asked to provide feedback on their experience and the value of this meeting. Overall, the goal of this inaugural meeting is to provide an atmosphere where graduate and postdoctoral students can come together and exchange scientific ideas about their research in the area of cell biology. Given the fact that this meeting will be organized and hosted by graduate students, we expect to instill a relaxed atmosphere for participants promoting interaction and possibly future scientific collaborations between the universities. Lastly, this opportunity will allow graduate and postdoctoral students to network with other individuals from the different universities and build potential collaborations in the future and expound on the foundation of their scientific careers. We intend for the relationships and connections made at the meeting to inspire ideas and identify resources available at other universities, expanding the field of cell biology in Appalachia.
