The following is an excerpt from "Ohio University, 1804-2004: The Spirit of a Singular Place" by Betty Hollow, published by Ohio University Press.

Frank Super, the son of university president Dr. Charles W. Super, took time from his electrical engineering studies to quarterback Ohio's first gridiron squad in 1894. History records the sole loss and, in fact, the only game of that inaugural season as an 8-0 defeat by Marietta. In preparation for the Thanksgiving weekend game at the fairgrounds between the "Athletics of Athens" and the "famous team of Marietta," local businesses and "sympathizers"or fans sported light-blue decorations and ribbons to show their support. Not until two years later, in 1896, did Ohio teams adopt green and white as school colors, chosen by the student body's vote.
