Marie Braasch
Goldwater Scholarship
Marie Braasch

At just 16 years old, Ohio University sophomore and Goldwater winner Marie Braasch already has an impressive academic portfolio. A biological sciences major in the Honors Tutorial College who began studying at Ohio University at age 13, Marie won second-place honors at the 2006 Student Research and Creative Activity Fair. This summer she will leave her hometown of Guysville, Ohio, behind and travel to Singapore to research changing adult stem cells into neural cells, which scientists believe can be used to cure Parkinson’s disease. Ultimately, Marie hopes to earn a doctoral degree in molecular and cellular biology.

It never came to my mind that (she) is a teenager. She behaved very professionally. She’s doing very well in the lab and working very hard.

Christine Schultz

Chemistry major Christine Schultz plans to one day earn a doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry and hopes to eventually become a professor. An Honors Tutorial College junior from Monclova, Ohio, Christine’s honors already include a Provost’s Undergraduate Research Fund grant to support her own research in transition metal chemistry.

I have found Christine to be a student of uncommon ability, intelligence and creativity. She is a determined student and worker who is unafraid of overcoming obstacles or difficulties. I am proud to have had her work in my laboratory, and I predict great success for her in the future.

About the Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program recognizes the very best science scholars in our nation and was established by Congress in 1986 in honor of the former U.S. Senator. Ohio University’s three Goldwater scholarship recipients competed in a field of 1,110 applicants majoring in mathematics, engineering and other science-related areas. Nationwide, only 317 students were selected as Goldwater Scholars. Winners receive a one- or two-year scholarship, which includes up to $7,500 per year to assist with academic expenses.

Since each university can nominate only four students for Goldwater consideration, Ohio University’s tally of three winners underscores an already impressive distinction. The success of our students in garnering such nationally competitive awards is a direct result of their commitment to their studies as well as the mentorship support and encouragement they receive from dedicated professors across all academic departments on our campus.

Karen Eichstadt, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, serves as the Ohio University Goldwater Scholarship faculty representative and coordinator of the award.
