Fall 2009 Move-in Info and Tips

As you plan to move to Ohio University this fall, here is the most current information about traffic and parking. Specific travel directions for each residence hall are listed below:

Please follow the travel directions as described below for each residence hall. You may think you know a better way or a shortcut to your destination, but may find that we have closed streets or changed them to one-way as part of the move-in plan. The result is that you may find yourself needing to turn around and go back to the recommended route.

First-year students will be able to move into residence halls beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 3rd. In order to manage the high volume of traffic on these days, the following move in schedule is recommended:

• As you approach each residential green, Ohio University staff members will provide specific directions based on the residence hall you need.
  
  
• Once you arrive at your residence hall, staff members will provide you with a campus map and write on it the room you're moving into and the time. You will have 30 minutes to unload your vehicle before you need to move it. You will be directed to a parking location where you can leave your car while you take care of room set-up, lunch, bookstores, etc.
  
  
• For most residence halls, the staff will be set up in the lobby to greet you and check you in. For New South Green residence halls, the staff will not be set up in every building, so you may actually check into your residence hall and get your keys in a building different from the one you're moving into. For a complete list of where to check in, see the list below.
  
  
• If you decide to visit uptown bookstores or campus offices, please leave your car parked where it is rather than try to drive uptown. You'll find the uptown traffic to be heavy and difficult. It will likely take you much longer to drive and park, than to walk.
  
  
• Bromley Hall residents have been assigned specific times to move in (due to limited parking and access). For the benefit of all, please adhere to these times. They are listed below.
  
  
• If, due to emergency circumstances, you arrive for move in after 10 p.m. on any day, contact the Ohio University Police at (740) 593-1911. The police dispatcher will be able to contact the Residence Life staff person on duty for your particular residence hall so you can check in.

Travel Directions for Specific Halls and Greens

Travel Directions to South Green

These directions are for all Old and New South Green buildings.

·         US-33 E joins US-50 W and OH-32 W in Athens, take Exit 17, for OH-682 N. Turn right at the first traffic light, onto Richland Avenue, to cross the Hocking River and enter the Ohio University campus. Stay in the right lane and turn right onto South Green Drive.  Follow directional signs to South Green.

·         Traffic flow is one way once you pass Wolfe Street. Please pay close attention to the following color schemes so that you do not miss your turn.

·         Park car closest to the student’s fall housing assignment

·         Adams Hall is the first facility on South Green.  There is a 30-minute unload zone in either the garage area or in the adjoining parking lot.  Longer term parking is available at any near lot with a purple move-in parking flag.

·         The rest of the South Green is color-coded during move in for easy visual recognition.  There are 30-minute unload areas near each building.  Longer term parking is available at any near lot with a purple move in parking flag.

                                                             ii.      Yellow – True, Smith*, Armbruster and Atkinson

                                                             v.      Orange – Crawford, Mackinnon, Brown and Pickering

 

*Students should report to the lower level of the residence hall (staff office for the complex).

Travel Directions to East Green

These directions are for all East Green buildings except Bryan, Scott and Voigt which have specific directions below.

·         Less traffic congestion:  Typically, this is the preferred method for entering into East Green. However, this summer there is construction at this exit which may or may not be completed by fall move in. 

·         Exit via Stimson Avenue (exit #16B if traveling West or 16C if traveling East).  Once on Stimson Avenue (facing the river) turn left and pass through Mill Street Village, turn right onto Mill Street and then left onto Stewart.  Follow Stewart to Union Street and turn right.

·         30-minute parking permitted for unloading after which the car should be relocated to one of the long term move in parking lots (identified with a purple flag) for the remainder of the day.

 

·         Heavier traffic flow option:

·         US-33 E joins US-50 W and OH-32 W in Athens, take Exit 17, for OH-682 N. Turn right at the first traffic light, onto Richland Avenue, to cross the Hocking River and enter the Ohio University campus.

·         682 N. Exit onto Richland Avenue turn right onto South Green Drive take second left (University Terrace) turn right onto Race Street.  Follow Race Street and turn left onto Union Street. 

30-minute parking permitted for unloading after which the car should be relocated to one of the long term move in parking lots (identified with a purple flag) for the remainder of the day.

Travel Directions to West Green

These directions are for all West Green buildings including the Convocation Center, but not including Bromley Hall which has different directions below.

Driving Instructions to – Convocation Center, James and Wilson Halls:

·         US-33 E joins US-50 W and OH-32 W in Athens, take Exit 17, for OH-682 N. Turn right at the first traffic light, onto Richland Avenue, to cross the Hocking River and enter the Ohio University campus. Stay in the center lane.

·         Travel through the traffic light and turn left onto West Green Drive. 30-minute parking permitted for unloading after which the car should be relocated to the Convocation Center or Central Food parking lot for the remainder of the day.

Driving Instructions to – Boyd, Ryors, Sargent and Treudley Halls

·         US-33 E joins US-50 W and OH-32 W in Athens, take Exit 17, for OH-682 N. Turn right at the first traffic light, onto Richland Avenue, to cross the Hocking River and enter the Ohio University campus.

·         Stay in the right lane, turn right onto South Green Drive at traffic light.

·         Turn left onto Oxbow Drive (1^st left) follow signs to halls.

·         Unload in garages under each of the residence halls – look for signs identifying each garage.

30-minute parking permitted for unloading after which the car should be relocated to the Convocation Center, or Central Food parking lot or in the Baker Center garage (paid by hour) for the remainder of the day.

Travel Directions to Scott Quad, Bryan Hall and Voigt Hall

 

US-33 E joins US-50 W and OH-32 W in Athens, take Exit 17, for OH-682 N. Turn right at the first traffic light, onto Richland Avenue, to cross the Hocking River and enter the Ohio University campus. Stay in the right lane.  Turn right onto South Green Drive take second left (University Terrace) and follow to the top of the incline.  Scott Quad is on the right – 30-minute unload in lots 4 & 6 and then park afterwards at either a pay meter or in one of the Ohio University lots on lower campus.  Continue on University Terrace for Bryan Hall.  Unload at a free meter and then park longer term in either the city parking garage, at a pay meter or in one of the Ohio University lots on lower campus.  For Voigt Hall, continue on University Terrace, turn left onto Union and then right onto South College Street.  Voigt is on the right before the traffic light (Voigt has large white columns in front).  Unload at a free meter and then park longer term in either the city parking garage (across the street), at a pay meter, or in one of the Ohio University lots on lower campus.

Travel Directions to Bromley Hall

US-33 E joins US-50 W and OH-32 W in Athens, take Exit 17, for OH-682 N. Turn right at the first traffic light, onto Richland Avenue, to cross the Hocking River and enter the Ohio University campus. Stay in left lane.

Turn left at the traffic light onto Shafer Street.  Follow Shafer Street to Union Street, turn right.  Travel a quarter mile turn into either lot 18 or 19 for 30-minute unloading.  Park at a paid parking meter, go to the city garage, or one of the lots on lower campus for longer term parking.

Check in Directions for New South Green Halls

Residence halls will officially open for first-year students on Thursday, September 3, at 9:00 a.m. The residence halls will officially open on Saturday, September 6, at 9 a.m. for all upperclass students.
