2008 Welcome Week Orientation for First-Year Students

Building on what you learned during Precollege, Welcome Week Orientation is designed to set the stage for a successful beginning at Ohio University. Where indicated, certain activities are required for all new first-year students (except that commuting students are not required to attend residence hall activities).

LINKS Prematriculation Program

 

  8 am - 5 pm Precollege Orientation; Bentley Hall
  4 - 5 pm Decoding Your DARS, Baker University Center Theatre
Hieroglyphics? Secret code? Looks like it, but a DARS is easy to figure   out after a basic lesson. No matter what your major, this presentation   will demystify the symbols on this important document. Every student gets an updated Degree Audit Reporting System or DARS report every quarter. Even if you don't learn to love it, you hafta learn to read it.

Saturday, September 6

10 am - noon

College Orientations, required for all new first-year students
Each new first-year student at Ohio University is enrolled in one of the nine colleges listed below. You will meet with the dean, faculty, staff and students of your college and begin to learn about it. Students in the College of Arts and Sciences will meet by department.

4 - 5:15 pm

Residence Hall Welcome, Required for all new first-year students living on campus
Meet your new neighbors and begin to get acquainted with your home away from home. Your Resident Assistant (RA) will host this session and will let you know the location. All students should be moved in and ready in time to attend.

 

6 pm

International Student Union Welcome Picnic

Sunday, September 7

1 - 2 pm

Community Connections, required for all new first-year students
This session with the Residence Life staff will provide you with the basics about living in your residence hall and on your green.  It will include everything from where to do laundry to negotiating roommate living agreements. Your RA will inform you of the location.

  2:30 - 3:30 pm

President's Convocation, required for all new first-year students
President Roderick J. McDavis, student leaders and other University officials will greet all new first-year students and induct you into the University community. Your RA will escort you to the Convocation Center.

  3:30 - 4 pm 

March through the College Gate, required for all new first-year students
At the conclusion of the President's Convocation, it is tradition that students from the entering class march from the Convocation Center to the College Green and walk through the College Gate, symbolizing their entry into the University community.

  4 - 6 pm 

Student Involvement Fair, on the College Green (rainsite: Baker Ballroom)
Representatives from over 200 campus organizations and activities will be on hand to tell you about their groups, answer your questions and sign you up.

  5 - 7 pm Welcome picnic for international students (AFIS/ISFS). Dairy Lane Shelter.

 College Adjustment Program (CAP) Orientation, Academic Advancement Center on the ground floor of Alden Library
If you are participating in CAP, you are invited to meet at the 2nd floor entrance of Alden Library to join in an orientation to the program and meet other students. The orientation will be held at the Academic Advancement Center on the ground floor of Alden Library. Refreshments will be provided.

Meal plans begin with breakfast at Boyd, Nelson, Bromley & Jefferson Dining Halls.

 

11 am - 3 pm

Volunteer Fair, College Green at West Portico (beside the auditorium)
Meet local agencies that need help! Sign up to volunteer. Music, free food, prizes. Rain site: Baker Unviersity Center Ballroom.

During Alden Library's Open hours The Code Game, 2nd Floor, Learning Common's Reference Desk, Alden Library
Do you have what it takes to crack the code? Test out your code-breaking skills while you explore the libray and campus. Earn prizes, including one of three $100 cash awards! Opening the Way, Baker University Center Ballroom
"Opening the Way" is an orientation to campus life for first-year African-American, Asian-American/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino and Native American students. First-year students meet faculty, staff and students; learn more about academic programs and social organizations at Ohio University and meet other members of their graduating class.

Wednesday, September 24

11 am to 3 pm

Majors Fair, Baker University Center Ballroom
Where will Ohio University take you? Come to the Majors Fair to find out! Representatives from the university's academic departments will be on hand to discuss academic major and minor opportunities with undergraduate students from all disciplines.
